Sarah Michelle Gellar hints at a more upbeat tone and the return of familiar characters in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
Hulu is developing a continuation of *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* and has cast Ryan Kiera Armstrong from *Star Wars: Skeleton Crew* as the new Slayer. Sarah Michelle Gellar, the original series lead, has shared insights into how this new series will differ from the original, along with hints about the return of other stars for a reunion.
*Buffy the Vampire Slayer* showcased Gellar as Buffy, a young high school student selected as the Slayer to combat vampires, demons, and other dark forces. In the sequel series, Gellar will reprise her iconic role, potentially mentoring Armstrong’s new Slayer in a world that has changed significantly since Buffy's youth. Armstrong's character is characterized as an introverted high school student.
In an interview with Vanity Fair Italia, Gellar mentioned that the new series will take on a lighter tone compared to some of the darker storylines and heavier content of the original's later seasons, stating, “It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original. We are looking to strike a balance between new and returning characters. I hope to bring back everyone who has passed away, but we also need to make space for new stories.”
She also discussed the generational differences that will arise between Buffy, the new Slayer, and both old and new audiences. “One surprising aspect of Buffy is that it has always been a crossover series. We're working on modernizing the series' themes, especially concerning what it feels like to be an outsider in a world influenced by social media. We aim to delve into the space-time boundaries that affect society today.”
There is significant potential for deceased characters to return, as the original series was known for its resurrections, including Buffy’s own. The series also featured several deaths in its later episodes and in the spin-off *Angel*, where Angel, Spike, and their allies prepared for a final battle against demonic forces, leaving their fates uncertain. Notable deceased characters from the Buffy universe include Cordelia, Anya, and Tara, the latter raising awareness of the Bury Your Gays trope prevalent across media.
The *Buffy* reboot is being developed by Chloé Zhao, the Academy Award-winning director of *Nomadland* and *Eternals*, who will direct the pilot. It is written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (of *Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.* and *Poker Face*) for 20th Television and Searchlight TV. In addition to her role in the pilot, Gellar will also serve as an executive producer for the show.
