Eragon is set to be adapted into a series for Disney+.
Disney+ has revealed its intention to create a live-action adaptation of Eragon, based on the young adult fantasy series The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini.
Originally published in 2002, Eragon tells the story of the main character who finds a dragon egg. Following this discovery, he and the dragon are pursued by a wicked king and his followers who have exterminated the dragons and their Dragon Rider order. Joining forces with the last surviving Rider, Eragon starts his training in dragon riding, magic, and swordsmanship to defeat the king and his malevolent army. The series' logline states:
"When fate chooses an ordinary teenager to become the first Dragon Rider in over a century, he must create an unbreakable connection with his dragon, master ancient magic, and confront the insane king who annihilated the Riders."
Disney acquired the rights to Eragon as part of its purchase of 20th Century Fox and has been aiming to develop it into a series since that acquisition. To facilitate this, they have appointed Todd Harthan, known for High Potential, to co-create the show alongside Paolini, with Harthan and Todd Helbing from Superman & Lois taking on the role of showrunners. Marc Webb, the director of The Amazing Spider-Man, will also act as an executive producer.
Eragon is the first installment in The Inheritance Cycle, which contains four books, a collection of short stories, and the spin-off Murtagh published in 2023. Paolini has indicated that he is currently working on a new series of novels within the franchise.
