Christian Petzold aims to have Nina Hoss and Paula Beer as leads in his upcoming film.

In a conversation with Christian Petzold last fall, the German filmmaker revealed he was working on two films: one being a crime story for German television, serving as the fourth installment of Polizeiruf 110, and another centered on “political-left witches who are targeting capitalists.” He has since announced another project, one that could be compared to a dream collaboration for Marvel: a drama featuring Nina Hoss and Paula Beer.

“I’m considering making a film with both of them,” Petzold shared with Letterboxd. “I've drafted part of a script. If I manage to complete it after this police drama, I believe both Nina and Paula will be interested. The story revolves around a theater group facing challenges—they have lost their venue to a harmful figure. This season is their last. They are staging a play by Chekhov with a not very strong cast. However, knowing that their group is coming to an end, they deliver their most outstanding performance ever. That’s the premise, with Nina and Paula as part of the cast.”

Hoss gained international recognition for her roles in Petzold’s films including Something to Remind Me, Wolfsburg, Yella, Jerichow, Barbara, and Phoenix. Beer, who rose to prominence with François Ozon’s Frantz, has starred in Petzold’s last four films: Transit, Undine, Afire, and Miroirs No. 3, which is debuting in U.S. theaters today. This reunion could certainly be one of the acting highlights of the decade, so hopefully, it progresses.

Petzold also commented on the recent political controversy at Berlinale, choosing not to speak about the genocide in Gaza, and remarked to Variety on his experience as a jury member in 2024, "While I was on the jury, we had numerous people onstage. We hosted individuals from Gaza who expressed their desire for a ceasefire. The Germans faced a significant issue. [They] are the perpetrators; they were responsible for the Holocaust. Now, they want to portray themselves as the good ones. Thus, they claim that antisemitism is the worst thing in the world. And it is indeed a terrible thing. However, there’s a quote from [philosopher Theodor] Adorno, who stated that a philosemite is an antisemite who loves Jews. Now, they aspire to be philosemites."
