Production for Donnie Yen's John Wick spin-off, Caine, has commenced with the release of a teaser announcement.

      While fans eagerly await the official fifth installment of the John Wick series, Lionsgate has initiated production on the upcoming spin-off, Caine, which features Donnie Yen reprising his role as the blind assassin. The studio shared this news in a brief teaser as filming began.

      Yen's character, Caine, was introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4 as one of John’s old friends, reluctantly compelled to track him down under the threat of the High Table harming his daughter. Despite fighting each other, John and Caine maintain a friendly bond and collaborate to outsmart the High Table. The last time we saw Caine was in the film's post-credits scene, where he was about to reunite with his daughter, unaware that danger lurked as Akira, the daughter of Shimazu whom Caine had killed earlier, was approaching to seek revenge.

      Caine will be Yen's directorial debut in English-language films, as he takes on the role of director and executive producer with a screenplay by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) and Robert Askins. Rina Sawayama is set to reprise her role as Akira, but no further casting announcements have been made so far.

      The John Wick franchise has been expanding over the past few years, starting with the prequel series The Continental and last year's spin-off Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas in a story set between the third and fourth chapters. An anime prequel has also been announced, focusing on John Wick's "impossible task" that solidified his legacy as the Baba Yaga, along with a AAA video game for current generation consoles. Regarding John Wick: Chapter 5, Keanu Reeves and series director Chad Stahelski are actively working on the story.

      A release date for Caine has not been confirmed yet, but it is anticipated for 2027.
