The 5 Greatest Movie Twist Endings
Here are the top five movie twist endings.
Spoilers ahead, of course.
We’re about to unveil a series of unexpected conclusions.
Just so you know
We’re not referring to twists like the one in Fight Club that occur later in the film but serve as a foundation for additional storytelling.
We’re focusing on moments at the very end of the film that alter everything that preceded them, possibly inspiring you to rewatch the entire film.
Ready? Let’s dive into the best movie twist endings.
Number 5: Primal Fear
Paramount
The Setup: Ambitious defense attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere) represents the seemingly meek Aaron Stampler (Ed Norton), an altar boy charged with murdering an archbishop. Vail believes his client suffers from dissociative personality disorder due to years of abuse, including from the archbishop, leading him to adopt the violent persona of Roy.
The Twist Ending: Aaron confesses that he fabricated his dissociative personality disorder — he is truly Roy at heart.
Why It’s One of the Best Movie Twist Endings: Ed Norton delivers an impressive performance, and it’s always thrilling to see an arrogant character like Vail have the ground pulled out from under him.

If you’re curious why another Ed Norton film — Fight Club — isn’t included here, it's because the significant twist occurs about thirty minutes before the film concludes.
It’s indeed a fantastic twist, but it doesn't fit our definition of a movie twist ending since there’s too much film left following the big reveal.
Number 4: The Wizard of Oz
MGM – Credit: C/O
The Setup: Dorothy (Judy Garland) lands in Oz after a tornado sweeps her and her dog, Toto, away from Kansas. She journeys down the Yellow Brick Road with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion to meet the Wizard, hoping he will fulfill their dreams.
The Twist Ending: “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!” The Wizard (Frank Morgan) is a fraud — an ordinary man using tricks to appear powerful. Dorothy and her companions realize they must achieve their own dreams through the strength and character developed during their adventures.
He gives the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion symbolic gifts to reflect this. When he attempts to return Dorothy to Kansas in a balloon, Toto jumps off, prompting Dorothy to follow and discover she can return home on her own.
Why It’s One of the Best Movie Twist Endings: Today, with the immense popularity of Wicked, many know that the Wizard was a fake. But imagine being a child in a theater in 1939, experiencing the film's colorful grandeur, and realizing that the entire foundation of Dorothy’s quest was deceptive. Yet, you find comfort in the fact that Dorothy, like you, can discover her own way home. It’s a deeply emotional twist.
Number 3: The Usual Suspects
Gramercy Pictures
The Setup: Customs Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) interviews Verbal Kent (Kevin Spacey), who appears to be the least reliable link in a criminal gang led by the ruthless Keyser Söze. Kent seems pitiful — slow-moving, cowardly, and seemingly as harmless as Ed Norton’s Aaron in Primal Fear.
The Twist Ending: Verbal is Keyser Söze, and he has been fabricating a false story for Kujan, drawing inspiration from items in the office.
Why It’s One of the Best Movie Twist Endings: The twist comes as a total shock yet makes complete sense. The Usual Suspects (named after a phrase from Casablanca) revolves around the power of storytelling and myth-building, a concept that screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie evidently contemplated deeply. He won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for this film, paving the way for a remarkable career, including many partnerships with Tom Cruise in the twist-laden Mission: Impossible series.
The Usual Suspects is also featured in our list of the 12 Most Mind-Blowing Movies We’ve Ever Seen — along with the top film on this list.
Number 2: The Sixth Sense
Buena Vista Pictures – Credit: C/O
The Setup: The third film by M. Night Shyamalan, which established his reputation as the “twist guy,” The Sixth Sense is a supernatural thriller featuring child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) alongside troubled boy Cole (Haley Joel Osmont), who claims he can see dead people.
The Twist Ending: In a twist reminiscent of The Third Man, Malcolm is dead. We witnessed his shooting at the beginning but assumed he survived. He did not.
Why It’s One of the Best Movie Twist Endings: We appreciate a film where the surprise has been concealed in plain sight all along. Shyamalan expertly allows us to draw our own conclusions throughout the
