Anna Kendrick will direct The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
Anna Kendrick, known for her roles in Pitch Perfect and A Simple Favor, is stepping back into the director's role to bring Taylor Jenkins Reid's novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo to Netflix. According to Deadline, Kendrick will helm the project with a script written by Liz Tigelaar and Francesca Sloane. The story centers on a young journalist's long-awaited interview with Evelyn Hugo, an elderly Hollywood star, who reveals the details of her seven marriages and shares stories of Hollywood scandals and betrayals, while also disclosing startling truths about her life and those around her.
This will be Kendrick's second directing effort, following her 2023 thriller Woman of the Hour, which Netflix acquired after its premiere at TIFF that year. Evelyn Hugo is set to be produced by Liza Chasin for 3Dot Productions, Brad Mendelsohn for Circle Management + Productions, and David Hinojosa, with Jenkins Reid serving as an executive producer.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has achieved bestseller status among Reid's works, with Netflix obtaining the rights in 2022. Since then, the streaming service has attempted to develop the project, even bringing on Leslye Headland and Maggie Betts to direct at different times, though those efforts did not materialize. With Kendrick now attached as director, it remains to be seen if this development will progress successfully.
