Raiders of the Lost Ark at 45: The Tale Behind the Ultimate Action-Adventure Classic

As Raiders of the Lost Ark marks its 45th anniversary, Hasitha Fernando explores the story behind the film. The movie is the ultimate "popcorn" flick, showcasing a rugged adventurer in Harrison Ford, relentless action, exotic locales, and a captivating storyline. It's the definitive action-adventure film that has inspired countless imitations but remains unmatched. In this celebratory moment, we reflect on the behind-the-scenes happenings during the creation of this classic…

The concept of Indiana Jones was developed long before filming began. After completing American Graffiti, George Lucas came up with the idea that would evolve into Indiana Jones. This notion formed when he saw an old movie poster featuring a hero jumping from a horse to a truck, reminiscent of the early 20th-century serials he adored as a child, such as Buck Rogers, Spy Smasher, and Don Winslow of the Navy. It was conceived as a B-movie, significantly influenced by those works, centering around a daring archaeologist named after his Alaskan Malamute. Lucas discussed the concept with his close friend Philip Kaufman, and they worked together for two weeks to outline the basics. Lucas imagined his main character as a womanizer and a nightlife enthusiast, but Kaufman disagreed and felt the Ark of the Covenant should be the story's focal point. Kaufman was particularly taken by the theories of hematologist Raphael Issac regarding the physics of biblical miracles, which he wanted to incorporate into the narrative through the Ark. Additionally, the Ark would serve as the primary antagonist's objective—namely, the Nazis.

Initially, Lucas wanted Kaufman to direct, but Kaufman was focused on The Outlaw Josey Wales. Thus, Lucas placed the idea on hold to work on Star Wars: A New Hope, inspired by Flash Gordon. In May 1977, just before Star Wars premiered, Lucas vacationed in Hawaii with his family, fearing negative reviews and box-office failure. He invited Steven Spielberg to join him, and it was at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel that Lucas pitched his idea, which was provisionally named "The Adventures of Indiana Smith." At the time, Spielberg had aspirations to direct a James Bond film, but he found Lucas's concept appealing and agreed to direct a few weeks later.

Lawrence Kasdan was a newcomer when he was hired to write the script. Discovered by Spielberg, Kasdan was gaining traction in the industry. He had written the screenplay for the 1993 romantic thriller The Bodyguard in 1975, which opened doors for him at studios. While the Bodyguard script circulated, Kasdan wrote Continental Divide, a tribute to classic comedies featuring Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. Spielberg, busy with his post-production tasks on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, stumbled upon this screenplay and persuaded Universal to purchase it for development under his company, Amblin Entertainment. He later passed it to Lucas, who was impressed by Kasdan's work and hired him to craft the script for "The Adventures of Indiana Smith".

Creating the ideal narrative was a lengthy process. Once Kasdan was on board, he, Lucas, and Spielberg engaged in extensive brainstorming sessions, spending over nine hours a day, three to five days a week, recording numerous ideas. By the end of their discussions, they accumulated a comprehensive 100-page transcript, which Kasdan later refined into a proper script over six months. Many ideas proposed by Spielberg and Lucas were primarily action sequences, such as the iconic boulder trap seen at the film's start, which needed to be woven into a coherent storyline. Spielberg disliked the surname Lucas had initially chosen for the character, feeling it echoed Steve McQueen's Nevada Smith from a western film. The trio ultimately decided to change the surname from "Smith" to "Jones," drawing inspiration from tough-guy actors like Clint Eastwood and Toshiro Mifune. They also aimed to make their hero relatable by ensuring he was flawed and human.

Initially, the filmmakers sought a lesser-known actor for Indiana Jones. The thought of anyone other than Harrison Ford embodying the legendary role seems unimaginable now. At the beginning of production, Spielberg and Lucas were in search of a relatively unknown talent. Casting director Mike Fenton suggested Jeff Bridges fit the role perfectly, while Lucas’s wife, Marcia, thought Tom Selleck from Magnum P.I. would be ideal. Unfortunately, Selleck had to decline due to contractual commitments to his series. Spielberg believed Ford was the best candidate, but Lucas was uncertain about his willingness to commit to a trilogy. Fortunately, Ford found the concept intriguing and agreed to take on the role of the globe-trotting archaeologist. He renegotiated his contract, securing a seven-figure salary and a share of the film's gross earnings. To prepare, Ford undertook a rigorous fitness regimen and learned to use a bullwhip with stunt coordinator Glenn Randall. Other actors in contention included Bill Murray, Steve Martin
