Exclusive Trailer for the 4K Restoration of Jae-young Kwak’s My Sassy Girl Brings Back the South Korean Classic
Kwak Jae-yong's romantic comedy My Sassy Girl, which became one of the highest-grossing films in South Korea upon its release in 2001, has been restored in 4K from its original negative to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The film is set to have its North American premiere on July 18 at the 2026 New York Asian Film Festival at Anthology Film Archives, and Film Movement plans to release it theatrically in North America this fall. In anticipation of the premiere, we're excited to exclusively unveil the new trailer.
Here's the synopsis: “Kickstarted by what could be the most comically disastrous meet-cute in film history, MY SASSY GIRL transformed the romantic comedy genre with remarkable flair. The life of an unassuming young man is completely turned around when a stunning and fierce female whirlwind bursts onto the scene. Their turbulent relationship captures the highs of blockbuster dreams while also diving into the heartbreaking realities of love in this outrageous and uplifting tribute to genuine affection. Inspired by a South Korean netizen’s blog recounting what are said to be true stories about his girlfriend, the film became a huge sleeper hit and is regarded as one of the most significant Asian films of the 21st century. A contemporary classic that is essential viewing, MY SASSY GIRL is described as an ‘unapologetic crowd-pleaser that blends genres with the daring spirit that makes Korean cinema immensely enjoyable’ (Film at Lincoln Center).”
