Lee Chang-dong Makes a Comeback with the First Trailer for Possible Love, South Korea’s Entry for the Oscars.
Eight years after his remarkable film *Burning*, Lee Chang-dong’s *Possible Love* is undoubtedly the most highly anticipated movie set to debut this fall. Running for 164 minutes, it tells the story of two married couples—a laid-off worker and his wife, as well as a documentary filmmaker and her husband—whose lives intersect when the filmmaker chooses to document them, forcing both couples to confront their differing lives and concealed desires. In advance of its premieres at Venice, TIFF, and NYFF, Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for South Korea’s submission for the Oscars, which will be available on their platform on November 6 after its theatrical release on October 23.
Here’s the synopsis from the New York Film Festival: “In powerful dramas such as *Secret Sunshine* (NYFF45) and *Burning* (NYFF56), the acclaimed filmmaker Lee Chang-dong captures the essence of contemporary South Korea, revealing the wounds of personal trauma and socioeconomic issues. His latest film centers around two middle-aged couples from contrasting backgrounds who form an unexpected connection. Working-class Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) and Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu), who have been together since their school days and are parents to a quiet 10-year-old, are still dealing with the aftermath of Ho-seok’s dismissal from his factory position following a violently suppressed labor union strike. Conversely, the affluent Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong) and Sang-woo (Zo In-sung) are a documentary filmmaker and her businessman spouse; Ye-ji has made the decision to create a film about job layoffs, intending to focus on Mi-ok and Ho-seok as her primary subjects. The result is a masterfully unfolding narrative filled with simmering resentments, changing loyalties, sexual tensions, and ethical questions surrounding nonfiction filmmaking, continuously revealing new depths and interpretations, supported by four exceptional performances that communicate a wide range of delicate emotional tones. *Possible Love* resonates powerfully with our shared current reality of emotional and economic instability.
