Werner Herzog wird Rooney und Kate Mara in einem Drama über „sexbesessene Zwillinge“ inszenieren.

In the midst of his numerous documentary projects, Werner Herzog has recently announced that he is working on his first animated feature, The Twilight World, which is based on his 2021 book of the same title. Additionally, Herzog is developing another narrative project that piques interest with its cast and storyline.

For the first time, Rooney and Kate Mara will share the screen in a film together, according to Deadline. They will headline Herzog’s film Bucking Fastard, which Herzog is both writing and directing. This film tells the true story of inseparable twin sisters Joan and Jean, inspired by the lives of Freda and Greta Chaplin, who became infatuated with their neighbor and later faced a restraining order. The film's title, set to begin production this spring in Ireland and Slovenia, comes from a verbal slip the twins made during court proceedings.

“I want to create a feature film about the twins Freda and Greta Chaplin,” Herzog stated in his recent memoir, Every Man for Himself and God Against All. “In 1981, they briefly captured attention in the British tabloids, famously known as the ‘sex-crazed twins’ for their obsession with a lorry driver neighbor, who ultimately took legal action against them to secure a restraining order. Their narrative is exceptional. They are the only known identical twins who speak in sync.”

Having met the twins before their passing, Herzog elaborated in his book, “It’s understood that twins can develop a private language when alone, allowing them to exclude others, yet Freda and Greta spoke the same words simultaneously. I recall them greeting me at the door, their words and gestures perfectly synchronized. This type of interaction may have been a ritual formed by practice. However, when responding to unexpected questions, they would answer in perfect unison. At times, they would speak separately; for example, Freda would initiate the first half of a sentence while Greta would contribute a word or two to complete it. They dressed identically, sporting the same hairstyles, shoes, handbags, and umbrellas; they moved with a remarkable coordination reminiscent of a Rorschach test poised to fold. Their walking style was distinct—not in perfect step, but with their inside feet together while timing their outside feet. Their bags were carried in their outer hands and umbrellas in their inner hands. You could easily create a symmetrical image of them. Their gestures were synchronized, and their awareness of one another was constant. For me to distinguish between Greta and Freda at our earliest meetings, I relied solely on their positioning as left or right.”
