Sarah Michelle Gellar discusses the Buffy sequel series, stating that they "are on track" to get it right.
This week delivered the unexpected and thrilling news that a sequel series to *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* is in development and close to being greenlit on Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar poised to reprise her legendary role if it moves forward. Gellar has expressed her views on this news, reassuring fans that “we will only create this show if we are confident we can do it well. I can tell you that we are making progress in that direction.”
Joining her for the prospective series are original *Buffy* executive producer Gail Berman, *Nomadland* director Chloé Zhao, and the showrunners and writers for *Poker Face*, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. Gellar shared her enthusiasm about returning to the role of Buffy on Instagram, explaining how the idea originated from a meeting with Berman and Zhao a few years ago.
“While I didn’t agree to anything at that initial meeting, I surprised myself by consenting to keep the dialogue going. These discussions did continue over the subsequent years, and eventually, we included the amazing Nora and Lilla Zuckerman in our little group until one day we found the right idea,” Gellar mentioned in her detailed post.
She further reassured fans that they were all enthusiastic about creating the sequel only if they could do it justice, as Gellar was not interested in a revival unless it captured the essence of the original series and resonated with fans. “I have always listened to the fans and noted your wish to revisit ‘Buffy’ and her universe, but I wouldn’t move forward unless I was confident we could get it right. This has been a lengthy journey, and it’s not finished yet. I promise you that we will only proceed with this show if we believe we can execute it well. And I can tell you that we are heading in that direction.”
The Zuckerman sisters will serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers for the series, while Zhao will direct the pilot and also act as an executive producer alongside Gellar and Berman. The new series will not center on Buffy Summers but will focus on the next generation of Slayers, with Gellar featuring in a recurring role as Buffy.
As we await more updates on the pilot's greenlight, it remains to be seen if other original *Buffy* stars such as Alyson Hannigan, who portrayed Willow, and Anthony Head as Giles, Buffy’s mentor and Watcher, will also return.
What are your thoughts on Gellar’s statements regarding the *Buffy* sequel? Do you hope to see it come to fruition if done right for its fans, or do you believe it should remain concluded with its final season? Share your opinions with us on our social channels at @FlickeringMyth…
