Matt Damon portrays Odysseus in the first image from Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.

Just a few days ago, Christopher Nolan was still finalizing the cast for his highly-anticipated adaptation of the grand Greek myth The Odyssey. Now, we have our first look at the film's main character Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon.

The official X account for The Odyssey revealed this image, while also highlighting the film’s release date of July 17, 2026. The picture features Damon, a frequent collaborator of Nolan (having worked on Oppenheimer and Interstellar), as Odysseus, the Greek hero central to Homer’s epic poem, who encounters cyclopes, cannibals, and sorcerers during his ten-year voyage home from war.

This is likely just the first of many glimpses, as a large ensemble cast is set to join Damon, including recently added Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Nick Tarabay, Jimmy Gonzales, and Maurice Compte. They will be alongside previously announced cast members Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Hamish Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Jesse Garcia, and Will Yun Lee.

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic filmed around the world using innovative Imax technology. This adaptation brings Homer’s foundational saga to Imax theaters for the first time and is set to premiere in cinemas on July 17, 2026.
