Austin Butler and Saoirse Ronan are set to star in Sean Durkin's Deep Cuts.
Following his intensely impactful trio of films—Martha Marcy May Marlene, The Nest, and The Iron Claw—director Sean Durkin aims to bring a lighter tone to his next project. He is set to write and direct a film adaptation of Holly Brickley's debut novel, Deep Cuts, which just released this week and explores a romance between two music-obsessed individuals in their twenties during the 2000s.
According to Deadline, Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler will headline the film, which is being produced by A24. Ronan will also serve as a producer alongside Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Josh Safdie. Ronan's upcoming project is Jonatan Etzler’s Bad Apples, while Butler is preparing for a significant summer with Ari Aster’s Eddington and Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing.
Below, you can find an interview with Holly Brickley discussing her novel, along with an official synopsis from Amazon and a playlist featuring every song mentioned in the book.
It’s a Friday night in a campus bar in Berkeley during the fall of 2000, and Percy Marks is once again discussing music. Hall and Oates play on the jukebox, and although Percy lacks any musical talent, she can’t resist overanalyzing the song, indulging in her most annoying habit. Tonight feels different, though. The man sitting next to her at the bar, fellow student Joe Morrow, is a songwriter who could listen to Percy all night long. Joe requests her thoughts on one of his songs, leading to a partnership that will last for years, ignite new passions, and repeatedly challenge their egos. Will their collaboration prove to be worth its price, or is it preventing Percy from discovering her own voice? Transitioning from Brooklyn's bars to San Francisco's dance floors, Deep Cuts delves into themes of talent, obsession, belonging, and, above all, the desire to be heard.
