The B-Side – Oscars Special 2025 (featuring Joe Reid & Chris Feil)
Welcome to The B-Side, brought to you by The Film Stage. Here, we typically discuss movie stars rather than the films that made them famous or continued their fame, focusing instead on the projects they undertook in between. However, today we are diving into Oscar films (!), or more accurately, films that evoke the spirit of Oscar movies!
Joining Conor and me is the delightful Joe Reid (co-host of This Had Oscar Buzz, creator of Cinematrix, and contributor to Vulture’s Movies Fantasy League) & Chris Feil (co-host of This Had Oscar Buzz and writer of an insightful series on Oscar history for Vanity Fair). Today, we each pick a film that is connected to a current Best Picture Oscar nominee.
The selected films include Seconds, The Name of the Rose, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Wolverine. We also discuss filmmaker Bill Morrison’s nomination for his remarkable short film Incident, Jean-Jacques Annaud’s 1981 film Quest for Fire, and our recent guest appearance on This Had Oscar Buzz to discuss The Devil’s Own.
Furthermore, we chat about Rob McElhenney’s episode on Hot Ones (where he shares his experience of being cut from The Devil’s Own as a young actor!), the “Hellfire” scene in Hunchback, and how The Wolverine fits into our B-Side theme.
Don’t forget to follow us on Bluesky at @tfsbside.bsky.social. Enjoy!
