“Family Affair” is a humorous and heartwarming short film that explores themes of secrets, friendships, and family dynamics. However, it feels like just the starting point for a more extensive narrative, providing a glimpse into the lives of characters we wish to learn more about. This was precisely the intention of writer Ernest Anemone.
Anemone is currently developing the short film, which has recently been released on YouTube following its festival debut at the Provincetown Film Festival in 2023, into a series of the same title.
The story centers around Tanner (Bear D’Angelo), a high school senior who appears to have it all. However, it's not your usual sitcom: Tanner is involved in a mysterious scheme with a large duffle bag, his mother delivers the best lines, and there’s a skeleton named “Boner” in his science class.

As “Family Affair” unfolds, Tanner engages with a range of characters in familiar settings such as his suburban home and high school, typical of sitcom formats. The introduction of Tanner’s father late in the film introduces a dynamic that could distinctly differentiate the series.
The creative team behind “Family Affair”
Director Julio Dowansingh establishes a warm atmosphere by incorporating a team predominantly made up of queer, female, and BIPOC creatives. Notable performances come from Donna Vivino as Tanner’s mom and Corey Barrow as his concerned best friend. Emily O’Leary serves as the director of photography, while the film is produced by Anemone, Kyle Burt, Amy DePaola, and John de la Parra.
Anemone’s unique background emphasizes his commitment to ethical filmmaking.
“I began my career as a trial attorney, and after discovering my true calling in acting and filmmaking, I started applying theater education methods to help individuals and organizations tell their stories more effectively,” he explains.
The film was among many that captured attention during a well-attended shorts block at the charming Waters Edge Cinema, one of the venues for the Provincetown International Film Festival. As noted after the festival, which took place from June 14-18, Provincetown is a festival that appears to excel in all aspects, with programming engaging and thought-provoking films like “Family Affair” being a key feature.
