Ice Cube has finalized a deal to both write and star in Last Friday.
Nearly 25 years since the last installment, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema appear ready to proceed with the long-anticipated fourth Friday. THR has reported that Ice Cube has officially committed to writing and starring in Last Friday.
The announcement was made by Richard Brener, president of New Line, during an interview with the trade publication. This follows Ice Cube's remarks from last year, expressing his optimism that Warner Bros. would greenlight the project under the new leadership of co-chief Michael De Luca, who was president of production at New Line and had supervised the original Friday trilogy during his time there.
Directed by F. Gary Gray, the initial film featured Ice Cube as the unemployed slacker Craig Jones, who experiences an eventful Friday alongside his friend, small-time drug dealer Smokey (Chris Tucker). While Tucker did not return for the sequels, Ice Cube and much of the supporting cast came back for the 2000 sequel Next Friday, and Ice Cube along with the late John Witherspoon reprised their roles in 2002’s Friday After Next. An animated series also briefly aired on MTV2 in 2007.
