Will Smith discusses the sequel to I Am Legend and the enigmatic character portrayed by Michael B. Jordan.

      Fans are eagerly anticipating what might unfold in a sequel to I Am Legend, and Will Smith is here to share some insights. During an appearance on the Drink Champs podcast, the actor discussed the initial plans and the direction they are now taking. “We were initially going to create a prequel,” he revealed, but the latest approach will incorporate the 2007 film’s alternate ending, where Smith's character, Robert Neville, survives, allowing for a continuation of his narrative.

      Regarding the new faces in the franchise, Smith clarified rumors about Michael B. Jordan's role, stating that he will not be playing Neville's son. “Michael B. Jordan’s character is currently the leader of a new settlement … in Connecticut,” Smith explained. “He’s not my son.”

      Smith also talked about the film’s controversial ending, which underwent reshoots late in the process, with an alternate ending being discussed for years. “Six weeks before the movie's release, we had to reshoot the ending that we had in the film where my character dies,” Smith detailed. “We saved that because audiences disliked it. However, that was our initial plan. It was likely an $8 million ending that was discarded due to the special effects and other elements involved.”

      I Am Legend ultimately earned $585 million globally. The sequel is being written by Akiva Goldsman, and Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) has reportedly been in discussions to direct. Stay tuned to Flickering Myth for further updates.
