Amazon purchases the remake of Highlander by Chad Stahelski and Henry Cavill.
Henry Cavill is set to join the ranks of Christopher Lambert (and Adrian Paul) as the next actor to portray the legendary Highlander. The film has been in development with Cavill since 2021, and even longer with director Chad Stahelski involved. It is now officially progressing under Amazon MGM’s United Artists, as confirmed by Deadline this week, with Michael Finch (John Wick: Chapter 4) now working on the screenplay.
According to the report, United Artists and Scott Stuber are in the final stages of negotiations to acquire the rights to this new version of Highlander from Lionsgate, where the project was initially developed. Stuber and Nick Nesbitt from UA will co-produce alongside Neal H. Moritz and 87Eleven Entertainment, Stahelski’s production company. Joshua Davis of Davis Panzer will also be a producer.
Stahelski has been connected to the project since 2016, and extensive development began in 2020. While plot specifics remain under wraps, the film is expected to be a modern take that pays homage to the 1986 cult classic. The story follows Connor MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander from the 1500s, who realizes he is immortal. Trained by another immortal (Ramírez, portrayed by Sean Connery), he battles others until only one remains. This is where the iconic line “There can be only one” originates.

As for Cavill, he has found a solid footing at this studio, as he is also developing an adaptation of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise for Amazon. This combination of geek culture is helping Cavill carve out his niche in Hollywood.
