Sinners records one of the strongest second weekends in Hollywood box office history.

Sinners has firmly established itself as one of the most significant modern films. Not only did it achieve an impressive opening weekend, but the film directed by Ryan Coogler is also experiencing an extraordinary second weekend.

In its second weekend, it experienced only a 6% drop, earning a solid $45 million compared to its $48 million debut. Sinners now holds the record for the smallest second-weekend decline for any film that opened over $40 million since 2009’s Avatar. Within its genre, it also has the smallest second-weekend drop for any R-rated horror film.

This weekend, it faced notable competition with the release of Ben Affleck's The Accountant 2 and Disney’s 20th-anniversary re-release of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. The Accountant 2 opened with an estimated $24.6 million, while the Star Wars prequel earned approximately $25.2 million, achieving one of the highest openings for a re-release.

Returning to the record-breaking weekend, Michael B. Jordan’s dual performance contributed to director Ryan Coogler's best second weekend ever for a non-Marvel film and the second-best sophomore weekend for an R-rated horror film overall, only behind 2017’s It.

As of the time of writing, Sinners has grossed $122.5 million in North America and $161.6 million globally against a production budget of $90 million.

“Seeking to escape their troubled pasts, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown for a fresh start, only to find that an even greater evil awaits their return.”

The film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, alongside Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo.

Sinners is currently playing in theaters.
