The Smashing Machine: Dwayne Johnson Becomes UFC Fighter Mark Kerr in Benny Safdie's First Solo Directing Project.
Fans of Dwayne Johnson often express disappointment that The Rock doesn't pursue more serious roles, but he does feature in The Smashing Machine, the first feature film written and directed by Benny Safdie without his brother, Josh Safdie. In this film, Johnson portrays Mark Kerr, a UFC fighter from the time before the sport became a global phenomenon.
The trailer conveys familiar themes: Kerr endures the challenges of a little-respected sport, supported by his loving girlfriend, Dawn Staples (Emily Blunt), whom he struggles to involve in his violent life. His sacrifices include enduring significant pain, which he initially addresses with Advil and subsequently with more potent substances, leading to further complications.
Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” plays in the background, perhaps with a touch of irony, as it has in numerous films before. However, it's all quite captivating, and witnessing The Rock engage in genuine drama serves as a compelling reason to be intrigued.
The casting choice is inspired: Johnson is only a few years younger than Kerr, who is currently 56, and is among the few individuals capable of authentically portraying the former UFC fighter and wrestler, who weighs over 250 pounds. Dwayne Johnson's journey from the WWE to becoming one of Hollywood's top box office draws is well known.
Written and directed by Safdie, the film also features Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, and Oleksandr Usyk. It is set for release in theaters on October 3 through A24, suggesting confidence in its potential for awards recognition.
Alongside Josh Safdie, Benny Safdie has previously directed acclaimed films, including Heaven Knows What (2014), Good Time (2017), and Uncut Gems (2019), before taking a hiatus to focus more on acting. He made a notable impression in Licorice Pizza (2021) and Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
The Smashing Machine is inspired by the 2005 documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr, directed by John Hyams, which, as suggested by its title, chronicles Kerr's remarkable life and career.
This documentary captures Kerr's experience in his first MMA tournament, the no-holds-barred World Vale Tudo Championships in São Paulo, Brazil, and his challenges with pain medication. It also highlights his rivalry and friendship with fellow fighter Mark Coleman, who is portrayed by Bader in Safdie’s film.
The Smashing Machine will be in theaters on October 3 from A24.
