First Teaser for Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest Translates Akira Kurosawa’s Crime Masterpiece to a Contemporary Setting.
One of the films we are most eager to see at the Cannes Film Festival is Spike Lee’s first narrative feature in five years, titled Highest 2 Lowest. This film, which reinterprets Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, marks another collaboration with Denzel Washington following their previous works together: Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man. Featuring Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, and A$AP Rocky, Apple and A24 have announced that it will have a theatrical release starting August 22, with its debut on Apple TV+ set for September 5, along with the release of the first teaser.
Here’s the synopsis: “A music industry titan (Denzel Washington), renowned for having the ‘best ears in the business,’ becomes the target of a kidnapping scheme, thrusting him into a critical moral predicament. Brothers Denzel Washington and Spike Lee reunite for the fifth time in their extensive collaboration to reinterpret Akira Kurosawa’s iconic crime thriller High and Low, now set against the tough backdrop of contemporary New York City.”
