Wong Kar-wai's Blossoms Shanghai Finally Receives Distribution Beyond China

Wong Kar-wai’s long-awaited *Blossoms Shanghai* premiered in China at the end of 2023. After three years of production, the series consists of 30 episodes, each approximately 50 minutes long (which totals 25 hours of new content from Wong Kar-wai, for those keeping track). However, since its debut, there has been no news about an international release. Finally, a year and a half later, an update on distribution has emerged.

MUBI has secured the rights to distribute the series in Latin America, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Turkey, and India, as reported by Deadline. While there is no confirmation of a U.K. or U.S. release yet, there are indications that discussions are underway, and the exact timing for the series' premiere in other regions remains unconfirmed.

The cast features Hu Ge, Ma Yili, Tang Yan, and Xin Zhilei, with Wong Kar-wai serving as producer and director. The narrative is based on Jin Yucheng’s novel and centers on Hu Ge’s character A Bao, a businessman navigating life in Shanghai during the 1960s and 1990s.

“Blossoms would represent the third installment of *In the Mood for Love* and *2046*,” Wong previously stated. “Jin Yucheng’s iconic novel *Blossoms* has been the ideal setting to express and share my affection for my birthplace,” he added. “With this series, I aim to invite viewers to engage with the complexities of Shanghai and its people in the early 1990s, a thrilling time that laid the foundation for the modern prosperity of Shanghai.”

Efe Cakarel, Founder & CEO of MUBI, remarked, “Wong Kar Wai was the catalyst for the creation of MUBI. His films embody everything we strive to promote: a bold vision, deep emotional resonance, and a unique sense of beauty. Introducing *Blossoms Shanghai*—his first series—on MUBI holds great significance for us. It’s an expansive, profoundly personal masterpiece, and we feel privileged to share it with global audiences.”
