
Emulsion Episode Six: Edo Choi and Alexander Fee Discuss Mikio Naruse
In a city where rents are exorbitant, the subways are sluggish, and spirits are barely above survival, the availability of repertory cinema might make dealing with such issues worthwhile. This is the thought one has while exploring "Mikio Naruse: The World Betrays Us," a comprehensive 35mm retrospective spanning Naruse's career that began last weekend at Japan Society and will continue at Metrograph. I had the pleasure of discussing Naruse's significance in both live theater and film with the programmers of these venues, Alexander Fee and Edo Choi. We talked about particularly noteworthy titles and, most importantly, the best dining options in the neighborhoods surrounding each theater.
