Care Bears make their comeback on the big screen in a new film directed by Josh Greenbaum.
Care Bears are making a comeback! According to Deadline, director Josh Greenbaum (known for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Strays) will lead a fresh adaptation of the beloved children's franchise.
The Care Bears began as multicolored bears created by artist Elena Kucharik in 1981 for American Greetings' greeting cards. They eventually became popular plush toys, establishing themselves as essential items for children. The franchise solidified its place in kids’ entertainment with animated specials like “The Care Bears in the Land Without Feelings” and “The Care Bears Battle the Freeze Machine,” and they later starred in their own television series, “Care Bears,” from 1985 to 1988.
In 1985, The Care Bears Movie was released, earning over $34 million globally and setting a box-office record for Canadian and non-Disney animated films. It remains one of Goldwyn’s highest-grossing releases. Although the film received mixed reviews initially, it quickly became a cherished classic for many kids of that era.
Chris Bender and Jake Weiner from Good Fear will produce the new film alongside Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley from GoldDay. Sean Gorman and Daniel Barne from Cloudco, the rights holders, will serve as executive producers, along with Sheila Walcott overseeing the project for Warner Bros.
Greenbaum recently completed the award-winning documentary Will & Harper, and he is reportedly set to work on a new Spaceballs film next.
EJ Moreno is a film and television critic and entertainment writer who began contributing to the pop culture site Flickering Myth in 2018 and currently serves as the executive producer of Flickering Myth TV, a YouTube channel boasting over 27,000 subscribers. With more than a decade in the field, he is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic and a member of the Critics Choice Association and GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics.
