Kevin Smith aims for Dogma 2 to be a sequel that is "worthy of Cannes."
Described as the film's "sweet victory lap" at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, Kevin Smith's Dogma may experience a revival with a potential sequel. Following its recent re-release, which has reminded audiences of the film's quality, coupled with a seven-minute standing ovation at the festival, Smith has expressed his desire to create a "Cannes-worthy" follow-up to the 1999 religious satire.
"I didn’t realize that once I got there, I’d be inspired once again, visiting all these places from my childhood and my twenties, from the three times I attended as a kid," Smith told Deadline. "And it struck me, ‘Why do you think the Cannes-worthy chapter of your life is over? You never really anticipated it happening in the first place. It was never part of the goal; it just came along with the journey. Perhaps if you genuinely try, you could achieve it.’”
The original film featured Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as Bartleby and Loki, alongside Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, and Alanis Morissette, with Jason Mewes and Smith returning as Jay and Silent Bob.
Regarding the Dogma sequel, Smith shared with Deadline that he is in the very early stages of development: "I’ve been whimsically contemplating it for the last six months, because that's how I approach writing. Writing isn't just about typing; that's the last part. It's all the brainstorming that happens before I actually sit down to write, so I'm in a whimsical phase. I've come up with the story, and I absolutely love it. I believe when people see it, they'll think, ‘Oh, I get it; that makes sense.’ Hopefully, they’ll find it clever rather than think, ‘Well, I would have done that.’ I’ll make sure to include a place at the table for everyone from the original film who is still with us. Unfortunately, Alan [Rickman] and George [Carlin] won't be joining us, but I'll set a place for all the others."
Additionally, Smith has been touring movie theaters for the Dogma: The Resurrection Tour to promote the re-release, which will soon allow the film to be streamed for the first time. Stay tuned for further updates on Dogma 2.
