Mikey Madison will take over Sydney Sweeney's role in A24's The Masque of the Red Death.
Oscar-winning actress Mikey Madison appears to have found her next role, as THR reports that the Anora star is in discussions to lead the cast of A24's reimagining of Edgar Allan Poe's The Masque of the Red Death.
Inspired by the 1842 short story, The Masque of the Red Death tells the tale of a mad prince who welcomes the noble class into his castle while a plague ravages the lower class. Madison is set to portray twin sisters, one of whom has been concealed among the lower class and now enters the castle into "a decadent world of orgies, opium, power schemes, revenge, and decapitations."
The film will be written and directed by Charlie Polinger (The Plague) and is described as "a quintessential A24 movie" filled with "eye-brow raising, meme-able scenes that should resonate with the TikTok generation."
This film will be Madison's first role following her Academy Award-winning performance in the titular role of Sean Baker's Anora. Previously, she had briefly been in talks with Disney and Lucasfilm to play the villain alongside Ryan Gosling in the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, but ultimately opted out of the role (Mia Goth has since taken it).
Madison takes over from Sydney Sweeney, who was originally cast in the film but has stepped back due to her busy schedule, which includes filming the currently-in-progress third season of Euphoria and several feature film projects.
About Gary Collinson: Gary Collinson is a producer and writer of film, television, and digital content. He is the founder of the pop culture website Flickering Myth and has produced the gothic horror feature film 'The Baby in the Basket' and the upcoming suspense thriller 'Death Among the Pines.'
