Saint Damian - Review of the Raindance Film Festival 2025

      Saint Damian (San Damiano), 2024.

Directed by Alejandro Cifuentes, Gregori Sassoli

      SYNOPSIS:

Damian departs Poland for Rome in pursuit of a new life. With only 50 euros in his pocket, he climbs a tower that overlooks the homeless community near Termini station, dreaming of music, love, and fulfillment.

It is often said that many individuals are only a few paychecks away from homelessness. This is not just a concerning idea but also a reminder that anyone can find themselves on the streets for various reasons.

In Damian's case, which we explore in this artistically crafted and impactful documentary, it is his free-spirited and creatively restless nature that leads to his lack of an official residence. Instead, he creates a precarious and unstable life for himself in a tower above Rome’s Termini station, a place filled with risks; there are highs, lows, and a particular street dynamic. Damian navigates his new surroundings and seeks to develop practical plans with admirable optimism. He aspires to be a vocalist and performer, utilizing his street smarts and language skills to write and create heartfelt songs and raps.

He also becomes a familiar figure in the neighborhood and easily makes friends. Into this narrative appears Sofia, a determined and strong-willed woman who has gained strength from difficult experiences while maintaining her charm and zest for life. The two begin a romantic relationship that will profoundly impact both of them.

San Damiano is a challenging yet ultimately fulfilling experience. The filmmakers effectively immerse us in the reality of being homeless and living on the streets. The sense that violence and suffering are always imminent is clearly highlighted, creating a tension that resonates with Damian's emotionally charged lyrics.

The filmmakers also made a commendable choice to remain neutral observers, not interfering with the recorded scenes. People living on the edge, like those depicted in this film, can behave unpredictably and may change without notice. Nevertheless, there is no judgment or blame; we simply witness and hear their world as they experience it.

Sofia plays a crucial role in the film's success as another highly intelligent fighter who does what is necessary to survive. The story of her and Damian supporting and caring for each other may not have started with much promise for a happy outcome, but this does not diminish the authenticity and beauty of their relationship.

A daring and beautifully crafted film that effectively captures the search for meaning in life while navigating survival.
