Marisa Abela will join Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe in the remake of Highlander.

As filming approaches for John Wick director Chad Stahelski’s long-awaited Highlander remake, Deadline has reported that actress Marisa Abela (Back to Black, Black Bag) has joined the cast.

Abela, who recently received a BAFTA TV Award for her performance in the third season of Industry, will be joining a lineup that features Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Connor MacLeod and Russell Crowe as Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, immortal warriors destined to face off in a final battle wherein the last survivor claims 'The Prize.' At this point, Abela's character has not been confirmed, but it is likely she will portray either the role of Brenda or Heather, depending on how closely Stahelski intends to adhere to the original storyline.

The original Highlander, directed by Russell Mulcahy, featured Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery as MacLeod and Ramirez, respectively, along with Clancy Brown as MacLeod’s adversary, The Kurgan, and a memorable soundtrack by the band Queen. Although it was a commercial failure when released in 1986, the film swiftly attained cult status, leading to a franchise with several forgettable sequels and a popular 90s television series.

Production on the new Highlander is set to commence in the UK in September, with Stahelski at the helm directing from a script by Michael Finch (John Wick: Chapter 4).

About Gary Collinson: Gary Collinson is a producer and writer in film, television, and digital content. He founded the pop culture website Flickering Myth and produced the gothic horror feature film 'The Baby in the Basket,' along with the upcoming suspense thriller 'Death Among the Pines.'
