2000 Meters to Andriivka Trailer: Director of 20 Days in Mariupol Documents Ukraine’s Struggle from the Frontlines
Following his Oscar win for 20 Days in Mariupol, Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov returns with another intense depiction from the frontlines of Russia's assault on his homeland. 2000 Meters to Andriivka, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, is set to hit theaters starting July 25. In advance of the PBS Frontline and Associated Press release, the first trailer and poster have been unveiled.
The synopsis reads: “From the Oscar®-winning team behind 20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL, 2000 METERS TO ANDRIIVKA captures the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war from a deeply personal and tragic perspective. After documenting the civilian casualties in Mariupol, Mstyslav Chernov shifts his focus to Ukrainian soldiers — exploring who they are, their backgrounds, and the heartbreaking choices they face in the trenches as they struggle for every inch of their territory. Amid a faltering counteroffensive in 2023, Chernov and his AP colleague Alex Babenko accompany a Ukrainian brigade navigating roughly one mile of a heavily fortified forest in their effort to free the Russian-occupied village of Andriivka. Combining original footage, intense bodycam video from the Ukrainian Army, and poignant moments of reflection, 2000 METERS TO ANDRIIVKA reveals, with haunting intimacy, that as the soldiers push further through their ravaged homeland, they come to understand that this war may never conclude for them.”
Dan Mecca noted in his review, “In 2000 Meters to Andriivka, we are immersed in the experience of war. Through a first-person lens, we accompany a brigade of Ukrainian soldiers as they advance to liberate the Russian-occupied village of Andriivka. As the Ukrainians make their way through the forest—steering clear of mine-laden roads—they come under heavy fire from enemy forces. The village lies just over a mile away, a critical stronghold in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.”
