When a family of telekinetic aliens, facing demise on a barren planet, gets accidentally sucked into a NASA rover and transported to Earth, they end up becoming literal illegal aliens, eluding the United States government! As his sister, mother, and father escape into the oddly familiar desert landscape, the youngest member of the group gets separated and eventually sneaks into the home of wheelchair-bound middle schooler Eric. Unsure of how to react to the small extraterrestrial, Eric and his older brother Mike quickly grow fond of him, naming their new alien companion Mac (short for Mysterious Alien Creature). While Mac adapts to Earth life, developing a taste for popular soft drinks and fast food, he desperately seeks to reconnect with his family. However, when armed government agents locate him, Eric and Mike come to Mac's rescue and hit the road, aiming to reunite him with his family before it's too late.
