The lineup for Locarno 2025 features new films from Radu Jude, Alexandre Koberidze, Sophy Romvari, Abdellatif Kechiche, and others.
Scheduled for August 6-16, the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival has revealed its exciting lineup. Key features include the world premieres of Radu Jude’s second film of 2025, titled Dracula; Alexandre Koberidze’s Dry Leaf; Sophy Romvari’s Blue Heron; Maureen Fazendeiro’s The Seasons; Le Lac by Fabrice Aragno, a collaborator of Jean-Luc Godard; Ben Rivers’ Mare’s Nest; Abdellatif Kechiche’s long-anticipated sequel, Mektoub, My Love: Canto Due; Sho Miyake’s Two Seasons, Two Strangers; and numerous others.
“The process of curating the Locarno Film Festival involves engaging with the evolving essence of modern cinema. This cinema develops amid global turmoil, as we witness in real time the horrors previously confined to history books and archival footage,” stated Giona A. Nazzaro, the Artistic Director.
He added, “The question is straightforward yet harshly unavoidable: what role does cinema play in a landscape dominated by an unceasing flow of images? What differentiates an image from a cinematic one on qualitative, ethical, and political grounds? Where does the indistinguishable stream of images cease, and the prospect of re-identifying the world's realities commence? Ultimately, always in remembrance of Roberto Rossellini, our mission is to serve humanity, reclaiming the world (and perhaps peace) one film at a time. Cinema is a public art form, particularly in its most innovative expressions. It embodies the quest to explore the potential of alternate realities.”
In conclusion, he remarked, “The cinema presented at the intersection of history for the 78th Festival edition does not shy away from reality and simultaneously investigates new forms of imagery while retaining an appreciation for the absurdities of life. It embodies a playful spirit, takes chances, dreams, and offers challenges; a cinema that steadfastly remains anchored in the world, looking forward together with humanity.”
