Before the Flashpoint event, Jean-Paul Valley's encounter with his dying father dressed as Azrael dramatically altered his life. Manipulated by the System to become the Church of St. Dumas’ assassin, Jean-Paul instead allied with Batman, taking the Dark Knight’s place when Bane broke his back.

Disturbed by his past, Valley adopted a more aggressive style as Batman and wore heavier armor. He eventually relinquished the role to a recovering Bruce Wayne and embarked on his own journeys as Azrael.

Luke Fox never planned to join his father, Lucius Fox, in a career at Wayne Industries. Despite having a talent for technological innovation similar to his father’s, Luke preferred to forge his own path. This perspective frustrated Lucius, who believed his son was wasting his potential and chances. Amid constant disagreements with his father, Luke trained in martial arts and participated in numerous mixed martial arts competitions. His intelligence, determination, and fighting skills eventually caught Batman’s eye, leading the Dark Knight to offer Luke a position as one of his agents after the original Batwing, David Zavimbe, retired.
