A new Amityville Horror movie is in development by the producers of Barbarian.
Producers of Barbarian at BoulderLight Pictures are preparing to reintroduce the Amityville haunted house franchise with a bold reinterpretation of this classic horror story. According to Deadline, they will collaborate with Divide/Conquer, the producers of Heart Eyes, to present this "based-on-a-true-story" tale of fright to a new audience. The directing duo of Joseph and Vanessa Winter, known for their 2022 found-footage horror film Deadstream, will helm the project based on their own screenplay.
While plot specifics are being kept secret, this new version is noted to disregard the events of the 1979 film featuring Margot Kidder and James Brolin, as well as numerous sequels that have come after it. Instead, it will concentrate on the actual supernatural occurrences that inspired those adaptations, providing a fresh perspective on the infamous Amityville house located at 112 Ocean Avenue.
The franchise is predominantly rooted in Jay Hanson's 1977 book, The Amityville Horror, which recounts the paranormal experiences of the Lutz family after they move into a home in Amityville, New York—previously owned by Ronald DeFeo Jr., who infamously murdered his entire family there. However, neither of these incidents is anticipated to be included in Joseph and Vanessa Winter’s film.
The last significant attempt to revive the franchise was the 2005 film The Amityville Horror, starring Ryan Reynolds, which, despite its lackluster reception, still earned more than $100 million globally primarily due to its brand recognition.
