Netflix is working on a live-action series of Captain Planet, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Greg Berlanti.

Leonardo DiCaprio has dedicated a significant portion of nearly ten years trying to get a film adaptation of the 90s Saturday morning cartoon series Captain Planet and the Planeteers underway. Now, it appears he’s shifting strategies by collaborating with the prolific television producer Greg Berlanti to revive the environmental superhero for television.

According to Variety, Netflix is partnering with DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions to create a live-action TV adaptation of the series, with the script being penned by Tara Hernandez, who is known for her work on Mrs. Davis and The Big Bang Theory.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers, created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner, aired from 1990 to 1992. The show was characterized as "edutainment," aimed at raising awareness about environmental issues, and centered on five young individuals—known as the Planeteers—who were entrusted by Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, to safeguard the planet from harm, with the aid of the superhero Captain Planet.

Efforts to transition Captain Planet into live action date back to the mid-90s, with DiCaprio’s Appian Way getting involved in 2016, bringing in Glen Powell to write and star in a film adaptation that remained in development as recently as 2023. With Netflix now part of this project, it might finally be time for Captain Planet to make his long-awaited comeback and help combat pollution.
