A film that has built a reputation of its own, Martyrs is considered a cornerstone of the New French Extremity movement and a highlight of director Pascal Laugier’s work. Both horrifying and intellectually stimulating, it is a deeply philosophical and challenging piece of extreme cinema, undoubtedly ranking among the best horror films of the twenty-first century.
In the story set in 1971, a young girl named Lucie Jurin (Jessie Pham) escapes from a slaughterhouse where she has undergone unimaginable torture. After being placed in an orphanage, she forms a close bond with Anna (Erika Scott), who attempts to help her heal from her trauma. Fast forward fifteen years into Lucie's adulthood (Mylène Jampanoï), she breaks into the secluded home of the Belford family, convinced they played a part in her childhood abuse. When Anna (Morjana Alaoui) receives a call from Lucie, she hurries to help her, but soon regrets entering the Belford house, where she faces experiences beyond human understanding.
With powerful performances from its two leading ladies and disturbing imagery brought to life by special effects designer Benoît Lestang, Martyrs transcends the discussions around “torture porn” to stand out as a significant work of extreme cinema. The Masters of Cinema Series takes pride in releasing the film on 4K UHD for the first time globally, featuring a stunning new 4K restoration accompanied by a host of new and archival extras.
