Exclusive Trailer for Anna Eriksson's E, Premiering at Locarno, Takes a Voyage Through the Desert.
Finnish artist and filmmaker Anna Eriksson will return to the Locarno Film Festival this year with her new feature, E. The film will premiere in the Fuori Concorso section, showcasing an avant-garde journey through the desert that explores the isolation of contemporary life. It features Eriksson along with Parco Lee, Elize van Huyssteen, Johannes Haasbroek, and Jooseppi Pyykkö. In anticipation of its debut, we are excited to exclusively unveil the first trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “Ex-prime minister Eva Vogler ignites a scandal at the Nobel Banquet and unexpectedly finds herself lost in a harsh desert. There, she encounters her doppelgänger and other enigmatic figures, including a possessed man masquerading as her husband. Throughout the film, messages are left on Vogler’s answering machine, hinting at the reasons behind the scandal. The doppelgängers pose a threat to all wandering souls in the desert, as they seek to annihilate the original and progress toward a metaverse devoid of human suffering.”
“With my latest work, I primarily seek to convey transcendence; Sand symbolizes the ashes of the past but also serves as the foundation of a new, yet-to-be-born world. The film’s characters are on their 'soul journey.' If I were to encapsulate the film's theme in a single sentence, it would be: The loneliness of modern man. I find this theme to be both urgent and universal,” stated the director. “Our society is more interconnected than ever, yet countless individuals experience profound loneliness and a persistent sense of insignificance and disconnection. We have subtly entered an era of incurable melancholy, a wholly natural outcome of residing in a system that alienates the human spirit. Similar to the characters in the film, we meander through the fabric of reality, in a desert of signs, often unsure of how to articulate what we truly seek, let alone what we actually need.”
