Denis Villeneuve's James Bond project has brought on Steven Knight, known for Peaky Blinders, as the screenwriter.
The new series of James Bond 007 films is one step closer to becoming a reality. Today, Amazon MGM, the new owners of the Bond film rights, announced that Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, has been appointed to write the script for Denis Villeneuve’s 007 film.
James Bond has been one of the longest-running film franchises for over six decades, inspired by the espionage novels of Ian Fleming. It began in 1962 with Dr. No, featuring the late Sean Connery as the legendary spy, and has seen a total of 25 films produced by Eon Productions. The most recent film, No Time to Die, which starred Daniel Craig as Bond, was released in 2021.
For many years, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli managed the Bond franchise until they chose to sell the rights to Amazon MGM last year, granting them full creative control. Since then, the future of Bond has been uncertain, with initial reports suggesting a disagreement between Broccoli and Wilson arose when the studio sought to create a broader universe with multiple TV series linked to the new films.

Just a few weeks ago, Denis Villeneuve was selected to direct the next chapter of Bond, which aims to reboot the franchise after Craig’s series of films. With Knight now on board as the scriptwriter, the next step for them and Amazon is to select the actor who will portray James Bond, a highly sought-after role in the film industry whenever it becomes available.
Knight has recently completed production on the Peaky Blinders feature film The Immortal Man, while Villeneuve is currently directing Dune: Part Three. A decision regarding the next Bond actor will happen after Villeneuve finishes on Arrakis and Knight wraps up The Immortal Man.
The new Bond film will be produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman for Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films, with Tanya Lapointe serving as executive producer.
What are your thoughts on this Bond news? Does Knight's role as writer, combined with Villeneuve's direction, make you feel more optimistic about the upcoming Amazon era of 007? Share your opinions with us on our social media at @FlickeringMyth…
