NYC Weekend Guide: Silent Movie Week, Leos Carax, Speed Racer, The Fall of Otrar, and More

      NYC Weekend Watch serves as our weekly summary of repertory screenings.

      The Museum of Modern Art is currently hosting Silent Movie Week; check out our conversation with curator Dave Kehr.

      At the IFC Center, a retrospective of Leos Carax kicks off, while screenings of In the Mood for Love and In the Mood for Love 2001 are ongoing. Late-night showings include Pulse, Cure, Clerks, Friday, and Ghost in the Shell.

      The Roxy Cinema is showcasing the Wachowskis' Speed Racer in 35mm through this weekend, along with restorations of Christiane F. and On the Silver Globe.

      Film at Lincoln Center is presenting the newly restored The Fall of Otrar, alongside continued screenings of In the Mood for Love and In the Mood for Love 2001.

      Anthology Film Archives is starting a tribute to Michael Roemer with a focus on 35mm films, while an ongoing series dedicated to Barbara Loden continues.

      Film Forum is now screening Brazil in a new restoration; several of Akira Kurosawa’s key films are also being shown as the 4K restoration of Hearts of Darkness continues.

      The Museum of the Moving Image is examining the timely question of whether Tom Cruise is evil with a career retrospective that features Top Gun on 70mm.

      The Paris Theater continues its technicolor series with The Black Pirate, while Punch Up makes its debut.

      Nitehawk Cinema will show Batman Forever early on both Saturday and Sunday.

      Metrograph has The Masque of the Red Death, Stranger Than Paradise, Office Killer, and Out of Sight screening on 35mm. It also marks the start of the Killer Films 30th Anniversary celebration (listen to our interview) alongside a restoration of Taxi Zum Klo. Topographies of Absence is set to begin, as well as retrospectives for Chang Chen and Jafar Panahi, along with ongoing screenings of Come as You Are, In ‘Scope and Color, High Voltage, and Florida is a Feeling.
