New Trailer for Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest Shows Denzel Washington Confronting a Moral Dilemma

Spike Lee’s first narrative film in five years is Highest 2 Lowest, a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, which reunites him with Denzel Washington following their collaborations on Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man.

The film also features Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, and A$AP Rocky. It premiered at Cannes a few months prior and is set for a theatrical release on August 15, followed by its debut on Apple TV+ on September 5. In anticipation of the release, the full trailer has now been unveiled.

The synopsis reads: “When a powerful music mogul (Denzel Washington), renowned for having the ‘best ears in the business,’ becomes the target of a ransom scheme, he finds himself caught in a life-or-death moral quandary. Denzel Washington and Spike Lee come together for the fifth time in their longstanding collaboration to reinterpret Akira Kurosawa’s iconic crime thriller High and Low, now set against the harsh backdrop of contemporary New York City.”

Luke Hicks commented in his Cannes review, “This duo has crafted one of cinema's most remarkable works, Malcolm X, with the other three films being strong contenders for any filmmaker’s best. While Highest 2 Lowest may not reach the heights of their previous partnership, the brilliance they’ve achieved in the past shines through numerous times.”
