Alicia Silverstone States That the Clueless Reboot is in Its 'Early Stages'
“You understand how particular I am about my shoes, and they only go on my feet,” Alicia Silverstone famously stated in Clueless. Thus, it’s not surprising that everyone involved in the new TV reboot is keen on getting everything just right.
In the 1995 film Clueless, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, which was written and directed by Amy Heckerling, Silverstone played the role of Cher, a fashion-obsessed teenager from Beverly Hills.
The actress appeared on NBC’s TODAY to promote her new series Irish Blood, set to premiere on Monday on Acorn TV. Host Savannah Guthrie also inquired if she could share any details about the newly announced Clueless series from April.
“Not much,” Silverstone replied, then expanded on her thoughts.
“I’m really excited about it,” Silverstone expressed. “I think we’re going to put forth a serious effort. Our aim is to honor what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher.”
She added that the new series on Peacock will also “honor” the original show.
“Our goal is to respect that while also introducing something fresh and new,” she said. “I’m confident we can achieve that, but we’re still in the early stages.”
Silverstone is anticipated to reprise her role as Cher in the new series.
Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss will be writing for the upcoming series, with Heckerling and the original Clueless producer Robert Lawrence serving as executive producers alongside Silverstone.
In Irish Blood, Silverstone portrays a Los Angeles attorney who travels to Ireland to find her father.
Reflecting on Cher and Clueless

Silverstone was first on TODAY 30 years ago at the age of 18, promoting Clueless. Guthrie showcased a clip from that interview, prompting Silverstone to reflect on the emotions it stirred.
“Cher is so confident, but I was quite shy,” Silverstone noted. “Especially back then. I think I still am, but I remember that some of the interviews were quite amusing.”
The new Clueless will not be the first adaptation of the film into a show: The sitcom Clueless aired on ABC from September 1996 to February 1997 as part of the network’s TGIF lineup, and then it ran on UPN from September 1997 to May 1999.
Rachel Blanchard played Cher since Silverstone had a conflicting development deal that prevented her from participating. However, other key cast members from the film did join the show, including Stacey Dash as Cher’s best friend Dionne “Dee” Davenport and Donald Faison as Murray Duvall.
