Mel Gibson's The Resurrection of the Christ is scheduled to be released in 2027 in two installments.
Mel Gibson's long-anticipated sequel to his successful 2004 film The Passion of the Christ is progressing, and with Lionsgate joining the project earlier this year, Deadline reports that The Resurrection of the Christ will be divided into two parts, both scheduled for release in 2027.
While specific plot details for The Resurrection of the Christ remain undisclosed, the title suggests that those familiar with the Christian origin narrative can make an informed guess. Although not yet confirmed, it is expected that Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci will reprise their roles as Jesus and Mary Magdalen, respectively. Filming is anticipated to begin in late summer in Europe, with Gibson directing from a script he co-wrote with Randall Wallace (Braveheart).
“For countless people around the world, The Resurrection of the Christ is the most eagerly awaited theatrical event in a generation. It is also a stunning and extraordinarily epic film that will leave audiences worldwide in awe,” stated Lionsgate CEO Adam Fogelson. “Mel is among the greatest directors of our time, and this project is not only deeply meaningful to him but also perfectly highlights his talents as a filmmaker.”
The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One is scheduled to debut on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, followed by Part Two on Ascension Day, Thursday, May 6, 2027.
