Written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, the film features Wagner Moura as Marcelo, a widower evading mercenaries in Recife, Brazil, while relying on the support of an underground resistance to survive, as he becomes a target amid the political chaos of the dictatorship. Against the vibrant yet violent backdrop of Carnival week in 1977 Recife, Brazil, widower Marcelo (Wagner Moura) finds himself an unintended target within the dictatorship's political turmoil. He is a technology researcher on the run from mercenary assassins, haunted by past traumas and confronting the aggressive and rebellious spirit of Brazil in 1977. As these threats escalate, Marcelo, aided by a mysterious woman named Elza and her allies in the burgeoning underground resistance, remains focused on escaping Brazil with his young son. Celebrated filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho collaborates with acclaimed actor Wagner Moura, who delivers an extraordinary, career-defining performance, to create a thrillingly unpredictable and historically rich epic that feels strikingly modern, while honoring the films of Filho’s youth amidst a backdrop of political unrest and imminent danger.
The Secret Agent will be released in theaters on November 26th.
