Sophie Turner has been officially cast as Lara Croft in Amazon's live-action series based on Tomb Raider.
Amazon MGM Studios is set to begin production on their series adaptation of the video game franchise Tomb Raider, announcing that Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, will portray the legendary explorer, Lara Croft.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge has written, created, and will executive produce the series, sharing showrunner responsibilities with Chad Hodge (Wayward Pines). Production is scheduled to commence on January 19, 2026.
Turner, who was initially linked to the role in late 2024, takes over the role from Alicia Vikander and Angelina Jolie, both of whom played the adventurous relic-hunter in previous films.
Waller-Bridge expressed her enthusiasm for Turner in a statement (via Variety), stating, “I’m thrilled to announce the incredible Sophie Turner as our Lara, alongside this fantastic creative team,” and added, “It's not every day you get to create a show of this magnitude with a character you grew up loving. Everyone involved is deeply passionate about Lara and shares her outrageous, brave, and humorous spirit. Prepare your artifacts... Croft is coming…”
The Tomb Raider series, first launched by Eidos Interactive in 1996, has sold over 100 million gaming units globally. Angelina Jolie was seen as an ideal choice for the franchise when Lara Croft: Tomb Raider garnered $274 million at the box office in 2001, but its sequel, The Cradle of Life, failed to perform well, earning only $160 million and leaving the franchise dormant for 15 years. In 2018, Alicia Vikander starred in a reboot that also made $274 million worldwide, but rights complications halted any potential sequel.
The character of Lara Croft was most recently voiced by Hayley Atwell in Legendary Television’s animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which debuted on Netflix last year and has been renewed for a second season.
