Mark Ruffalo to Appear in Bertrand Bonello's Upcoming Film

After the remarkable success of The Beast, one of the finest films of the century so far, we’ve been eagerly anticipating how Bertrand Bonello would follow up that groundbreaking, decade-spanning work. This summer, we received a clue that his next endeavor might be Santo Subito, one of three scripts he has been working on.

Although no plot specifics have been shared, the title translates to “Sainthood Now,” a well-known chant heard during the funerals of Pope John Paul II in 2005 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2023, aimed at conferring sainthood. It’s hard to envision Bonello taking a straightforward approach to the subject of Conclave, so as we wait for more information, we have some interesting casting news.

In a recent profile for Flaunt, Mark Ruffalo disclosed that he will be featuring in Bonello’s upcoming film, stating, “There are many directors I haven’t collaborated with, but I feel so fortunate. I’m often surprised that I’m still in this journey, you know? I’m going to work with Bertrand Bonello (The Beast, Nocturama, Saint Laurent) soon, which is thrilling.”

While Ruffalo didn’t elaborate further, early reports indicate that production for the film was set to start this fall, so we’ll see if that timeline holds. Following Poor Things and Mickey 17, Ruffalo has recently completed work on Lena Dunham’s Good Sex.

Bonello mentioned upon the release of The Beast, “Someone told me when I arrived in New York in September that The Beast represents the culmination of all my films. Every film was a step towards this one; it incorporates everything. Now, I feel the urge to explore new directions. Regarding what you mentioned… Patricia Coma is the name of Julia Faure’s character in Coma, and she really became deeply invested in this project. She followed the dailies, the casting, and every edited version closely. She was incredibly valuable in terms of dialogue. For instance, when Gaspard died, her input was instrumental in the casting. Yes: she acted as an ‘artistic guide’ simply by discussing the film with me daily.”
