Exclusive Trailer for the 35th Anniversary Restoration of Zhang Yimou's Ju Dou Featuring Gong Li

      A significant collaboration between China's leading actress and director Zhang Yimou, the film Ju Dou starring Gong Li has been restored and will be re-released for its 35th anniversary, starting at Film Forum on October 3. In anticipation of this, we are excited to exclusively present a trailer for the film, rejuvenated in its vibrant visuals by Hiventy, IMPEX Films, and ARTE.

      Here’s the official synopsis: “This film marked the introduction of director Zhang Yimou and star Gong Li to the global cinema scene, following the story of the beautiful young Ju Dou, who is married to a cruel and impotent owner of a dye mill in the early 20th-century Chinese countryside. When the owner's nephew appears, they fall passionately in love. Their ensuing affair leads to the birth of a son. The secretive couple convinces the tyrannical husband that he is the father, raising the boy as his long-desired heir. However, complex issues of infidelity result in a tense and psychological clash between the lovers and their ruler with dramatic consequences. Known for its breathtaking visuals and rich color palette, Ju Dou was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards® and is celebrated as one of the finest Chinese films ever made. The restoration was completed at Hiventy Laboratory in Paris by IMPEX Films with the assistance of ARTE, France.”
