The Secret Agent Trailer: Wagner Moura is on the Run in the Thriller by Kleber Mendonça Filho.
Following his works Bacurau and Pictures of Ghosts, Kleber Mendonça Filho has achieved the most significant acclaim of his career with The Secret Agent. The film has won two prestigious awards at this year's Cannes (Best Director for Mendonça Filho and Best Actor for Wagner Moura), and it will be released by NEON starting November 26. In anticipation of the release, a new trailer has been unveiled.
As noted by Leonardo Goi in his Cannes review, “Mendonça Filho’s perspective is notably more open to the surreal, and his love for cinema ultimately influences the film’s aesthetic. Shot by Evgenia Alexandrova in Panavision and filled with vintage transition edits, split-diopter shots, and curated music, The Secret Agent not only interacts with the genre films from the time it portrays; it also consistently affirms the director’s steadfast faith in cinema’s ability to disturb and enchant."
Here’s the synopsis from NYFF: “The Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, known for his captivating works such as Aquarius (NYFF54) and Bacurau (NYFF57), returns with a thrillingly unpredictable and empowering political fable about individuals caught in circumstances beyond their control. Set in Mendonça’s hometown of Recife during the late 1970s, The Secret Agent earned him the Best Director award at Cannes. Wagner Moura was also rightfully awarded Best Actor for his compelling role as a widowed former college researcher whose life has been violently disrupted by a corrupt government official. While evading capture and living under an assumed identity during the nation’s military dictatorship, he attempts to escape while also trying to reconnect with his young son whom he was forced to leave behind. Even this succinct overview fails to prepare the audience for the intertwining storylines and pleasures of Mendonça’s unique and affectionate tribute to cinema and the Brazil of his youth, as well as to the importance of preserving one’s identity in the face of power abuses.”
