Skybound’s Energon Universe is set to hit television with a crossover featuring Transformers and G.I. Joe.
The Transformers and G.I. Joes are finally set to converge in the Energon Universe, an animated series for adults based on Skybound’s popular comic universe, which includes Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals, according to Deadline.
Skybound, established by Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead and Invincible, acquired the rights from Hasbro to publish Transformers and G.I. Joe comics. In the summer of 2023, the company surprised fans with a revelation on the last page of Void Rivals' inaugural issue, linking it to Transformers and initiating the Energon Universe where the three titles coexist. Skybound revitalized Transformers later that fall, making it one of the year's top-selling titles, setting records, and winning two Edgar Awards for comics.
Initially penned by Daniel Warren Johnson for its first two years, Transformers will now have Kirkman as the head writer, starting with the latest release of Transformers #25. In contrast, G.I. Joe began with various miniseries focused on characters such as Duke, Scarlett, and Cobra Commander, leading into the main G.I. Joe series, which debuted last year under writer Joshua Williamson. Although an official crossover between the two franchises hasn't occurred yet, there have been brief appearances of characters from both sides, notably featuring a comatose Megatron being experimented on by a younger Cobra Commander.
The Energon Universe will cater to an "adult sensibility" for mature audiences. Joe Henderson (Lucifer) is set to act as the showrunner and writer for the series. A platform for the show has not yet been confirmed, as Skybound prepares to present it to potential buyers.
This development comes after Hasbro Entertainment's attempts to create a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover over several years, highlighted by a tease at the conclusion of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, where a G.I. Joe agent suggests a partnership with Optimus Prime and the Autobots. However, the progress on the live-action crossover has slowed, as Hasbro and Paramount remain uncertain about the future of both franchises on the big screen.
As Kirkman embarks on his journey with Transformers while still writing Void Rivals, next month will introduce Williamson’s ‘Dreadnok War’ in G.I. Joe #13, featuring an unlikely alliance between Duke and Cobra Commander.
