1970 Answer: Airport

Landing just behind the top-grossing film of 1970, Love Story, Airport followed a formula later adopted by disaster films like The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno:
Assemble a group of A-list stars, put them in danger, and watch the chaos unfold.
Burt Lancaster once referred to Airport as “the biggest piece of junk ever made,” yet it spawned three sequels and was famously parodied by the 1980 film Airplane.

This tale of a Vietnam veteran and part-Navajo hapkido master emerged as one of the major hits of 1971 — especially following its re-release — even surpassing Dirty Harry, which was the first of Clint Eastwood's five films about San Francisco cop Harry Callahan.
Here’s another big hint: It starred Tom Laughlin in the lead role and is known for the song “One Tin Soldier.”

Billy Jack continues to be a beloved cult classic of the 1970s.

Paper Moon stars Ryan O’Neal, who also topped the box office with Ali MacGraw in 1970’s Love Story. The film tells the story of a con man on a road trip with a feisty child who might actually be his daughter during the Great Depression.
Director Peter Bogdanovich cleverly cast O’Neal with his real daughter, Tatum, who rightfully won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

1974 was a particularly fruitful year for Mel Brooks: He not only released the Western satire Blazing Saddles, which topped the year’s box office, but also another comedy that satirized a different genre.

The classic comedy Young Frankenstein continued to show in theaters into 1975, where members of Aerosmith saw it and borrowed one of the film's jokes for their hit song “Walk This Way,” as noted in our list of Classic Rock Songs Inspired by Movies We Love.
So not only is it one of the successful films of the 1970s, but it also contributed to one of the biggest hit songs of that decade.
