The Enigmatic Stare of the Flamingo Trailer: Chile’s Oscar Nominee and Cannes Champion Premieres in December.

Diego Céspedes' feature debut, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo, which won the Un Certain Regard Award at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, has been chosen as Chile's Oscar entry and is set to arrive in the U.S. by year’s end. Ahead of its theatrical release on December 12 at NYC's Roxy Cinema, Altered Innocence has unveiled a new trailer and poster.

The film is described as follows: “Taking place in a secluded Chilean mining town in 1982, Diego Céspedes’ stunning debut centers on young Lidia, who is raised in a vibrant queer environment led by drag performers and trans women. When a strange illness—believed to be transmitted through the gaze of men—induces fear and panic, the community faces suspicion and violence. Through Lidia’s perspective, Céspedes creates a poignant allegory of love, myth, and prejudice, reinterpreting the early AIDS era as a queer western infused with poetic intimacy and surreal, arid landscapes.”

Zhou-Ning Su remarked in his review from Cannes, “Stories about the AIDS epidemic serve as enduring reminders that ignorance, bigotry, and hate can be deadly. The latest beautiful example is from Chilean writer-director Diego Céspedes, whose feature debut, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo, premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard sidebar. While the film may miss a narrative beat or two needed for it to fully soar, it remains a beautifully made, deeply moving homage to love and community—a vital piece of queer art.”
