House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have been renewed.

House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have been renewed.

Viewers will be returning to Westeros for several more years, as HBO has renewed both Game of Thrones prequels for additional seasons. House of the Dragon is set to return for a fourth season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been granted a second season ahead of its premiere in January.

HBO chairman Casey Bloys announced the renewals alongside the release of first-look images from House of the Dragon's third season, which is slated to debut in the summer of 2026, as seen above and below. The fourth season is scheduled to air in 2028 and is currently being scripted by showrunner Ryan Condal, who had previously indicated that the series would conclude after four seasons. However, Bloys hinted that the fourth season may not be its final one.

"For all of our shows, we generally allow the creators to make that decision," Bloys stated. "We'll collaborate with them. Sometimes, as they progress through the season, they will consider whether it feels like a natural conclusion. I don't have updates on that for now, but I will inform you when I do."

House of the Dragon occurs more than 200 years prior to Game of Thrones, focusing on the Targaryen dynasty’s civil war for the Iron Throne, which would lead to significant repercussions for Westeros' future. The cast includes Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, and Ewan Mitchell.

On the other hand, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the second spin-off of the Game of Thrones franchise, set 70 years after House of the Dragon and 100 years before Game of Thrones. Featuring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, the series is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s novellas, detailing the adventures of Duncan and his squire Egg, who harbors a mysterious secret while traveling across Westeros.

Unlike House of the Dragon, which experienced a two-year gap between seasons, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to air its second season in 2027. This quicker turnaround is due to the latter’s smaller production scale compared to the former, as Seven Kingdoms comprises six half-hour episodes rather than the lengthier formats of Dragons.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut on January 18th, 2026, while House of the Dragon season three will premiere in the summer of 2026.
